If you’re looking to upgrade your barbecue game this summer, I highly recommend that you check out the Char-Griller Akorn Kamado Kooker ($270). The Big Green Egg natural charcoal grill is a staple among barbecue enthusiasts, but if you don’t want to mortgage your house to buy one, the Char-Griller alternative is an amazing option. I bought the previous model a few years back and I couldn’t be happier with it.
The Char-Griller Akorn Kamado Kooker features a 306 square inch solid cast iron cooking surface and traps heat inside an insulated stainless steel body. It’s not solid ceramic like the BGE, but it insulates just as well (I’ve done plenty of grilling on the BGE and can attest this is true) plus the Char-Griller alternative is much easier to move as it’s not nearly as heavy.
I’ve used my Char-Griller for everything from 24 hour smoked brisket to pizza, I can even get the grilling surface up to 700+ degrees to sear sous vide steaks. It truly can do it all.
