In her first installment for a new Vox series called Earworm, Estelle Caswell delves into some of the weird musical stuff happening in the track Videotape off of Radiohead’s In Rainbows. Caswell references a longer video by Warren Lain in which it is revealed that Radiohead has hidden a syncopated rhythm in the song that even the band members have trouble keeping straight when they’re trying to play it.
Videotape is certainly a powerful song and the syncopated rhythm seems to add an eerie, uneasy feeling into the mix. Really cool stuff. Be sure to stick around in the video for the short explanation of how rhythmic sound synchronizes the brain waves of groups of people, because apparently that’s a thing.
